Violated: A list of questions

For the intruders --

Had you watched me? It seems you had. Was it for weeks, months even? Did you know how long I had been home with a baby but without a husband? Did you realize we had finally left town? Would you have come even if we hadn't?

What must it have been like to trip our alarm – greeted by 95 decibels – but then to delight in the realization that no one was coming?

Did you console your conscience by saying we had too much? Or that our insurance would cover our losses?

How will you feel when you attempt to steal my infant child’s identity, now that you have his social security card? Will there be any guilt at all when you destroy the good standing of a child that hasn’t even taken his first steps?

Did you ever dream for a moment that you would get such an incredible payday? I imagine you were quite surprised when you opened our safe to find much more than our weapons. Could you have ever dreamed of getting all my precious jewelry – even my wedding rings – in one fell swoop?

How could you have known, when you grabbed my Dutch Doll quilt to pad the television, that you were taking my most precious family heirloom…a piece of my life spanning 30 years and made by my beloved Mam-maw who’s gone forever? Could you have imagined how hard I would weep to discover that unexpected vacuum?

Did your girlfriend who went through the things in my closet touch any of my clothes? Try any of them on? I wouldn’t be able to tell…she was so courteous to put my empty jewelry boxes back just as she found them.

Did you laugh and sneer when you rifled through our private things – intimate things that only a husband and wife share?

Did you boast when you realized that your crime went undiscovered for nearly a week?

How could you know that the ramifications of your actions would be so drastic and far reaching? Did you have any idea that the situation would spark a fire in family relationships – strengthening some while utterly destroying still others?

Would you have imagined that two people with so many things would feel so helpless at choosing a qualified attorney? You couldn’t have foreseen the obstacles we would encounter with the alarm company and insurance adjuster. Did you simply block out any thought of the hardships you would cause?

Did you know you were hitting a military family? Did you feel any guilt when you pushed my husband’s flight suits aside to take our things? Would it have changed your mind to know of a husband fighting in such a remote location that his wife and baby still wait for him more than two weeks after the crime? Could you have even imagined that there were still such remote places on this earth?

If you had known I would be distressed to the point of physical pain, or that my child would get so sick that I would rush him to the hospital this weekend, would you have shown any mercy?

Would you have ever guessed that this experience would be so incredibly humbling, frightening and strangely cathartic for our family?

If my baby and I had been home, would you have come anyway? Would you have killed us?

  3. I am so sorry this happened to you. Having your home invaded is just horrible. It isn't bad enough they steal your stuff, but to know that disgusting criminals were in your home, going through your personal stuff, ugh, it infuriates me!! (Crap like this makes me think spring-guns should be completely legal.) Just glad you weren't home when this happened, and you and Colin are safe. Most burglars break in during the day to avoid confrontation, but then aren't smart enough to figure out that not every house is empty during the day.

If you need any help navigating through the legal nightmares, please let me know. And be sure to check every pawn shop for your jewelry, weapons and any electronics, you'll probably find it all one county over or something, and continuously check ebay. Again, most burglars just aren't smart. If these particular criminals were smart, they wouldn't have tripped your alarm at all.

Also, if you haven't already, get a credit protection service for Colin. There are services available that will actually call you when there's a hit on the credit report, (often with the criminal still standing in Best Buy trying to get a credit card). Unfortunately, the SS office won't issue him a new number (you probably already found that out), even though they have branded us with these numbers and then don't bother to transmit them in any sort of secure fashion. Might do the same thing for you and Keith as well, because who knows what the criminals saw while they were there (i.e. credit card statements, bank records, etc.)

Anyway, again, I am so sorry this happened to you. Sure it's just "stuff" but it's your HOME, your privacy and that's sacred. Some horrible people violated that, and I hope they're caught and punished.

But I especially hope you and Colin are feeling better. :(

  4. Thanks -- Lots to do. Been overwhelmed with paperwork. Lots more to share about the whole situation, but probably won't get around to writing it all out for a few days. We're going to have a serious battle with the alarm company. They received the signal from our system FOUR TIMES on the night of the break-in, and they elected NOT to call the police. They won't return my calls...for obvious reasons, I suppose.

The good news is that Keith is supposed to be home tomorrow. That will be a huge blessing.

Colin is much better. Trip to the ER this weekend. Had the croup, and his airway got really constricted. Scary at the time, but he's doing good again.

  5. They definitely aren't going to return your calls, they know they're about to get seriously sued. Their attorney will be the one returning the calls for this!

But at least things are looking up! Colin's better, you're better, Keith will be home, and yay, you've finished your master's!!! Everything else will work out eventually, it'll just take some time to get it all sorted out.

Good luck with all the paperwork. If there's anything I can do to help, let me know!

  6. It takes a special kind of scumbag to steal from a family with a deployed member. I have faith in the justice of the universe that something large and heavy will fall on these guys. If it could fall off of a C-130 gunship, all the better.

  7. Holy Cr@4! I can't believe that happened to you. And the worst thing is it's STILL happening. As I read your post my stomach tied up in knots and my face got flushed with fury. I'm glad you and Colin are ok, but that doesn't make it any less awful. I wish you strength through this ordeal.
